What you need to know to help you find the perfect doula

From the moment you find out you are expecting you wonder about all the things you should now do. You ask for recommendations for the best doctor or midwife. You then wonder if you should really hire a doula and if it is ok to hire someone who is still training. What are the best questions to ask when interviewing a doula? What benefits will a doula have for you? Of course, you’ll want to know how will you know when you have found the perfect doula.

What is a doula?

Let’s start by answering an important question, what is a doula? In the unofficial definition a doula is who supports your birth decisions. Someone who will support you weather you want a homebirth, birth center, unassisted. They can’t make birth decisions or speak on your behalf, they are there to remind you if the decisions you made before hand.

What benefits will a doula have for you?

There is actually evidence that says having a doula helps reduce the unnecessary interventions. On it’s own I think that is enough but in case you need more lets add some of the many other reason you should consider hiring a doula. The most important thing to some was having a third-party patient advocate. Someone who has your best interests in mind who is willing to educate you along the way and remind you to take a moment to think about your options.

This labor support person can be a woman or man, yup you can find both and pick which one is best for you. Once you find a few that you are interested in meeting set up a location and time that works for you both. I would even say to take your partner with you as a way to make sure you all get along. The person you decide to hire will be spending a lot of time with your family.

What are the best questions to ask when interviewing?
  • Why they wanted to get into this field
  • What training and experience do you have?
  • Do you have contingency/back up plans?
  • If birth goes past x amount of hours is there an additional charge an hourly rate
How will you know when you have found the one?

Once you have met “the one” you will know. The bond will be there, the chemistry and the friendship. Training may seem important but you may soon notice that someone with all the training in the world may not have the bond you are looking for. If you don’t think you have found the right one just yet, try again.

I encourage you to join us on Saturday March 3rd, 2018 when we interview a few doulas who will be live to answer your questions.

  1. We are all done having children but will share with our friends who plan for more!

  2. Although I didn’t have a doula when I had my two boys, I know that those that did have overwhelmingly said they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Having an extra person on your side is always a good thing.

    Great tips.

    1. Thanks for reading. I have giving birth with and without a doula. With a doula I felt like I had less to focus on.

  3. I am waaay past my baby making days LOL but these are wonderful tips for Mamas to be 🙂

  4. I sooooo regret not having a doula! But I will definitely have one next go around ♥️ I think a lot of people don’t realize the benefits a doula can provide!

    1. A doula is such a great support. Someone to remind you of what you wanted and doesn’t need to worry you’ll ask for a divorce lol
