About me!

Hello, my name is Carmen. I am the founder of A Side of Crunchy which provides pregnancy, birth, and postpartum support. I began my journey without really knowing it while pregnant with my first daughter in 2008. I was receiving care from a provider who didn't see me, I was just another patient. I left that office so upset and so my journey began and I fell into a rabbit hole.

I am a trained doula, birthkeeper, placenta encapsulation specialist but I am currently training as a peer lactation counselor, and a midwife. I strive to provide evidence-based to all of my clients because that is something I needed and didn't get. I don't want my clients to have to wonder but I want to encourage them to educate and prepare themselves.

I am so excited to be able to share my knowledge with families and help them achieve their birth dreams.

My Passions

My passions include pregnancy and birth but unassisted birth became a true passion in 2016 after the birth of her daughter, Brooklyn. Check out the blog and you'll find her birth story. As I continued to learn and push myself I came across the unassisted or freebirth community. I later learned that is where my passion was and it was hard to find a doula to support you. All of these doula organizations were talking about "rules" we needed to follow if we wanted to be certified through them. Yeah, that wasn't happening for me. I found "H.E.R.B.A.L" and knew it was a match. I could be the doula or birthkeeper I wanted to be.

I loved finding a good book, sometimes audio because of time and life with six children, and sitting around just reading. Blogging and sometimes even some podcasting get a little more attentention when I have a topic I just can't let go of. Does that ever happen to you? I have gotten into working out not really because of the number on the scale but for my health. I never thought I would do it but here we are.

About us

As you know my name is Carmen but I am not the only one on the team. We are family-owned and operated and I have the honor of working with my husband and my daughter, Faith who is just 12 years old. Yup, you read that right! I am the parent who will encourage her children to do whatever their passion is. Recently my daughter asked me to start taking courses and of course, I agreed it would be the perfect time for Faith to learn about her body and her reproductive system.

I met my husband in Miami; we married in 2013, and I became bonus mom to our now teenage son Nikolaus as well as wife to an amazing man. In 2009, we welcomed Faith to the family, and since have been blessed with three more children Michael, Aria, Brooklyn, and Julio. When pregnant with Faith I discovered the option to have a home birth I jumped at it. That lead me to explore the world of cloth diapering, vaccines, and now managing a large home — all with a little freelance on the side. Life in a house full of children was quite an adjustment.

We are a large family of seven living in Tennessee enjoying the outdoors and our crunchy community.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about our family. Please be sure to join our mailing list because although we are just getting started we will have some great stuff coming your way!
